For Brien Houston, helping people plan for their financial future is about more than investments. It's about building relationships, understanding what matters most to each person, and helping individuals and families make informed decisions that support their long-term goals. As a financial advisor with Edward Jones, Brien brings his experience in finance, a commitment to education, and a personal approach to helping clients navigate everything from retirement planning to investment strategies and wealth management.
Although his Edward Jones office is located in Seattle's Magnolia neighborhood, Brien's roots run deep in Shoreline. He grew up here, returned after serving in the U.S. Navy, and is now raising his own children in the community he has called home for most of his life. For Brien, supporting his neighbors and local business owners is a meaningful way to give back to the place that helped shape him.
Q & A with Brien Houston of Edward Jones
Q: How long have you been in business?
A: I began my career as a financial advisor with Edward Jones in 2025, following several years working with Institutional Banks and Private Equity groups in financial at PitchBook. I've always enjoyed learning about investing and the financial markets, and becoming a financial advisor gave me the opportunity to take that knowledge and work directly with individuals and families to help them pursue their goals.
Q: What inspired you to start your business?
A: My interest in investing started when I was young. My grandmother was one of the first people to teach me about the stock market, researching companies, and thinking about investing as a long-term process.
That interest stayed with me throughout my life and eventually led me into a career in finance. What I enjoy most about being a financial advisor is getting to know people, understanding what's important to them, and helping them make thoughtful decisions about their financial future. Everyone has different goals, challenges, and priorities, and I really enjoy helping people work through those decisions.
Q: What service does your business provide for our community?
A: As a financial advisor with Edward Jones, I work with individuals, families, and business owners to help them plan for their financial futures. That includes retirement planning, investment strategies, education savings, and navigating more complicated financial decisions like employer stock compensation and long-term wealth planning.
A big part of my approach is education. I want people to understand their finances, the options available to them, and how the decisions they're making today can impact their lives down the road
Q: What do you love the most about Shoreline?
A: Shoreline is home, and it has been for almost my entire life.
I was born on Capitol Hill in Seattle in 1990, but grew up in Shoreline and lived here until I joined the U.S. Navy in 2010. After my military service, I moved back in 2015 and have been here ever since.
I still have family here, and now my wife and I are raising our two children in the same community where I grew up. There's something special about being able to share the parks, neighborhoods, and community experiences I remember from my childhood with my own kids.
I've watched Shoreline change and grow quite a bit over the years, and I'm excited about where it's headed. What I appreciate most is the sense of community and the opportunity to be involved in helping shape the place my family calls home.
Q: Why is your business based in Shoreline?
A: While my Edward Jones office is physically located in Magnolia, Shoreline is my home community and an important part of where I want to build my business and relationships.
Being a financial advisor gives me the opportunity to work with people throughout the region, but there's something particularly meaningful about helping the families, neighbors, and local business owners who make up the community where I live.
Q: What’s one thing you wish your customers knew about you but never ask?
A: I'm a U.S. Navy veteran, and my time in the military has had a lasting influence on how I approach my work and relationships.
The Navy reinforced the importance of responsibility, accountability, teamwork, and following through on your commitments. Those are values I try to carry into my work as a financial advisor.
I'm also someone who genuinely enjoys getting to know people. Whether it's talking about financial markets, family, sports, or what's happening around Shoreline, I value the relationships I build and the opportunity to learn from the people around me.
Q: What inspires you each day?
A: My biggest motivation is my family and the idea that the work we do today helps shape the world the next generation will inherit.
I want my children, and the generations that follow, to have more opportunities and a better quality of life than those who came before them. I believe that takes people who are willing to work hard, take responsibility, and invest their time and energy into helping others.
Whether that's being a good husband and father, helping someone make an important financial decision, coaching youth sports, or getting involved in the community, I try to approach each day with the goal of making life a little easier and creating more opportunities for the people around me.
If I can look back and know I've made a positive difference in the lives of my family, friends, and community, I'll consider that a life well spent.
Q: What future plans or goals do you have for your business?
A: My goal is to continue building a financial advisory practice rooted in strong relationships, education, and being an active part of the communities I serve.
One thing I'm particularly interested in is creating more opportunities for financial education through local workshops, community presentations, and conversations that make financial planning more approachable.
